"I can never eat it without a knife and fork myself," she added kindly. How authentic? Struggling with my tartufo dessert, a serrated knife appeared over my shoulder, wielded by the lovely owner. Tra di Noi is a small, authentic Italian gem off Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. Total for all of the above was $140 per couple. Definitely check it out, very good red sauce italian. All the diners were enjoying the food, and one person, a regular, said, "it's the best kept secret in the bronx". Maybe this might be why people complain about the service, but it was very friendly and the food was great. Besides the hostess there was one waiter and one busboy. It's a small place, maybe 10 - 12 tables. We also ordered two bottles of wine, from a fairly reasonable wine list. Nice sized portions just right for sharing. The carbonara, calarmari, veal and meatballs were especially good. Everything was delicious in an old school, red sauce way. For dessert, we had the creme caramel and tartuffo (from Vindy's) and two expressos. On her advice, we ordered the calamari, arugula salad, house salad, veal sorrentino, fettucine carbonara, risotto porcini, and ribbon pasta with meatballs (which he only makes on Sundays) with extra meatballs so everyone could have one. Her husband is the chef, from Italy who trained cooking for wealthy families. The owner hostess (Laurie?) was warm and friendly and spent a lot of time with us talking about what to order and other things. Came here after visiting the Orchid Show at the Bronx Botanical Garden. If we had oodles of money, we would hire a limousine to take us there every week so we could have several more feasts. We were a party of 4 for dinner at 6pm on a Sunday night (Roberto's is closed on Sundays and doesn't take reservations). Both Helga and I have often thought of our lunch and plan on returning. The owner stopped to ask if we were enjoying the food and he was both pleasant and kind. Trattoria Tra Di Noi is a treasure from the red and white checked tablecloths to the top notch cuisine and friendly staff. Both of us ate our fill and at the end I struggled to eat two more pieces of potatoes as they were irresistible. Aah! The roasted potatoes were the stuff of dreams browned in spots and jmouthwatering. The green beans were both crisp and tender. After all how often will I be able to return? Both the vegetables were also cooked well. I ate as slowly as I could not only to savor each bite but to etch it in memory. The pork scallopini was succulent and the capers in the sauce heightened the flavor in the sauce. The veal stew was tender and paired well with the fusilli. All the dishes had brilliant colors and looked appetizing. A basket of brown bread was placed on the table and we both took a piece and dipped it in the olive oil that was on the table. Helga chose a Merlot and I had a glass of Chardonnay. Veal stew with fusilli and pork scallopini with capers accompanied by roasted potatoes and green beans to be shared. We decided on two entrées from the specials. Menus were given and we also looked at the specials written on a chalk board which didn’t list prices. reservation but were seated right away facing the street so we could see the view. After some research, we decided to have lunch at Trattoria Tra Di Noi which had a Michelin star.
